Late Summer 2011

Racing Review - Late Summer 2011

14th September

We’ve had an eventful summer at Saville House that has provided four winners, six places and a first ride for our stable apprentice Shannon Edmondson !

BROUGHTONS PARADIS continued her consistent season with a with a good win at Newmarket in July over a mile and a quarter, and was just held off over course and distance in August finishing second, both rides under Stevie Donohoe. From thirteen runs this year BROUGHTONS PARADIS has won on three occasions and has only been out of the first four once. Hopefully she can go on and win again before retiring to be a mother next year !

ARCTIC MAIDEN, owned by the Saville House Thoroughbred syndicate got off the mark at Nottingham in August having refused to race at Windsor ten days earlier. Running over a mile and a quarter under Stevie Donohoe this smashing little filly landed the odds in style and followed up under a six pound penalty over a mile at Yarmouth a week later. On this occasion things were much tougher and Arctic Maiden had to dig deep and showed real courage under a strong ride from Donohoe to make it two from two. For these combined efforts, Arctic Maiden amassed the staggering sum of £3299.19 in prize money.

BROUGHTONS POINT made her National Hunt debut a winning one at Worcester under Leighton Aspell at the end of August. Racing in a maiden hurdle over 2 miles she jumped sweetly and would arguably have made things more comfortable had she not veered to the far rail after popping the last. It was however a satisfying start over the sticks for our proven stayer.

At the end of August our Apprentice Shannon Edmondson was let loose for her first ride under rules - and was thrown in at the deep end to ride against the likes of Jamie Spencer and Franny Norton !! Seasoned handicapper Turjuman was her ride for this intriguing debut at Wolverhampton.

There were some pre-race nerves on the night and Shannon was a little on edge as well !! Once the formalities of getting out onto the track were out the way Shannon looked the part cantering down to the start. They seemed to take forever to load before the starter pressed his big red button and the gates flew open.

Shannon and Turj were soon settled at the rear of the field and started to make headway around the final bend passing one, then kicking into the straight to make good progress passing two more, taking advantage of Shannon’s seven pound claim, to finish fifth with the 7/2 joint favorites bringing up the rear.

It was an encouraging debut for Shannon, who having had an appetiser is hungry for more! Watch this space.

In other news, time was called on veteran FOLIO’s career in August. The eleven year old gelding won 9 of his 93 starts and was placed on another 21 occasions winning over £100,000 in prize money over his nine year career.
